Surrogates should be healthy before starting the process

On Behalf of | Feb 27, 2025 | Surrogacy Law

Surrogacy is one way that people can expand or start their family. This involves them having a woman carry a baby for them. It’s critical that the woman who’s carrying the baby is healthy enough to do so safely.

There are many factors to consider before becoming a surrogate mother. Understanding these may help a woman considering this option to ensure she’s making the right decision. These are some of the physical health factors to consider:

Medical screenings

A surrogate mother should go into the process as healthy as possible. If the surrogacy is done through an agency, there will be specific criteria. Ideally, the woman will have given birth without major complications at least once. She should be a healthy weight and not have any chronic health conditions. Screenings for genetic conditions and infectious diseases are also critical.

Risks and medical procedures

The surrogate mother will have to undergo fertility treatments, including in vitro fertilization and hormone therapy. These can lead to mood swings, bloating and headaches. She’ll also face the risks of pregnancy, including miscarriage, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

Long-term health considerations

A surrogate’s long-term health should be prioritized, including recovery after childbirth and the potential impact on future pregnancies. Regular medical follow-ups and a strong support system can help ensure both physical and emotional well-being post-surrogacy.

Once the health of the surrogate is found to be suitable and it’s time to move forward with the pregnancy, all parties involved should ensure they protect their own interests. Working with someone familiar with these matters might be beneficial.
